    Volunteer

Cayuga County Habitat for Humanity operates entirely on volunteer power!  We are a unique volunteer experience for people of all ages, races, religions and abilities. We welcome people from all walks of life to join us in our mission to end substandard housing throughout Cayuga County.

We have a variety of volunteer opportunities, with onsite construction work being the most popular form.  Please consider one or more of the following:

The Board of Directors meets once a month, currently meetings are held the last Monday of each month.  Start time is 6:00p.m. and usually last an hour to an hour and a half.  Location varies so please contact us at cayugacountyhfh@yahoo.com to find out where the meeting will be held.

Board members are responsible for ensuring the organization continues to operate successfully and within established guidelines.  Most Members also serve as a chairperson of a committee.

Committees meet on an as needed basis which is determined by what phase of a project we are in.  Volunteer committees assist in designing homes, selecting families, soliciting donations, organizing special events, coordinating public and media relations, and helping in the office. No matter what your particular skills, Habitat can use your help!

It all starts with the Family Selection & Support Committee.  When we are ready to begin planning for our next project this committee begins actively seeking applications.  They do this through a combination of newspaper ads, notices to local churches, social service agencies and large employers. They meet with the applicants to complete the application and obtain the other required documentation. They make scheduled home visits to review the issues with the current living conditions. From all the qualified candidates they determine which has the greatest need and makes recommendation to the Board to be voted upon.  The committee also teaches home ownership classes to the selected family and is their source for information during the project and for the first year of home ownership.

Once a family partner is determined the Site-Selection Committee works to find and purchase a house or building site suitable for the family based on their family size, community they wish to reside in and total budget. They work with members of the Construction Committee when looking at potential sites to determine the extent and cost of necessary building or repairs.

The Construction Committee is responsible for determining what necessary building or repairs are needed and for developing a schedule for the work to be done.  They advise the Volunteer Committee of the number volunteers needed for each day of scheduled work.  The Committee ensures that the construction site remains a safe environment, volunteers receive necessary training and the project remains on budget.

    Construction Volunteers:
There seems to be a myth out there that you need to be a skilled laborer to work on the Habitat site. The fact is we are grateful for your desire to help and we will find a task suitable for your skill level or will teach you how to perform a certain function.

There are age minimums for the construction site.  No one under the age of 16 may be on the work site.  No one under the age of 18 may operate a power tool.

Typically, the construction crew works Wednesdays 5pm to 8pm and on Saturdays from 8am until Noon.  The Volunteer Committee works together with Construction Committee to schedule the number of workers needed each day based on what work is being done.

The Volunteer Committee is responsible for recruiting volunteers as individuals or in groups.  They maintain a database of volunteers consisting of name, address, contact info and the role they wish to perform.  They then work to fill the requests by the various committees for volunteers.  They also document the number of volunteer hours, ensure required waivers and releases are completed and filed and provide safety training sessions.

The Fundraising & Special Events Committee plays a crucial role as we operate entirely on donations from our local community.  The Fundraising & Special Events Committee is responsible for maintaing the donor database, the annual mail campaign, soliciting local Foundations and developing and implementing other creative and effective means of fundraising.

The Public Relations Committee is responsible for keeping Cayuga County Habitat for Humanity in the public eye.  This requires interaction with all of the other committees and communicating their needs or services to our community.  The PR Committee will submit press releases, produce the newsletter, update the website and maintain literature for our affilate and about Habitat International.  They keep historical information and photos on past and current projects.  Committee members are also available to speak to groups about Habitat.
